Physical Education in the New Ukrainian School (NUS): BSPU Faculty and Students Join the Dialogue on the Future of Specialized Senior Secondary Education

On October 22, 2026, faculty members from the Department of Physical Culture, Sports, and Teaching Methodology, together with students majoring in Secondary Education (Physical Culture), attended an open lecture organized by the Lviv State University of Physical Culture named after Ivan Boberskyi. The lecture focused on the reform of specialized senior secondary education within the framework of the New Ukrainian School (NUS).
Special attention was given to physical education as a mandatory educational component in specialized senior secondary schools, as well as to the key documents regulating the planning and organization of the educational process within the NUS system.
A significant aspect of updating the curriculum is the introduction of a new model syllabus for physical education, which includes a variable component consisting of 34 distinct modules. This expands the range of physical activities available for selection, allows for the consideration of students’ individual interests and needs, and facilitates the creation of a flexible, learner-centered educational process.
Particular focus was placed on the new professional profile of a graduate from a pedagogical higher education institution—a modern physical education teacher capable of designing competency-based courses, adapting physical exertion to students’ capabilities, assessing individual student progress, researching and refining their own pedagogical practice, and utilizing digital technologies. The new philosophy of the “Physical Culture” subject entails fostering in students a conscious attitude toward their own health, a culture of physical activity, and a lasting need to lead an active lifestyle.
Professional dialogue, the exchange of experience, and exposure to modern educational practices contribute to enhancing the professional training of future physical education teachers. They help prepare these educators for work within the framework of the New Ukrainian School (NUS) and support the ongoing improvement and updating of educational curricula to align with the current requirements and needs of school education.
The department’s faculty members extend their sincere gratitude to the organizers and speakers of the open lecture for an insightful session, relevant information, and the opportunity to participate in discussions regarding significant changes in Ukrainian education.
