Inclusive Physical Education: From Scientific Approaches to Modern Classroom Practice

Scientific knowledge supported by real-world teaching experience is an important foundation for the high-quality professional preparation of future physical education teachers. The combination of theoretical approaches and practical aspects of inclusive physical education was at the heart of a guest lecture held on 30 October 2026 at the Faculty of Physical Culture, Sports and Human Health of Berdyansk State Pedagogical University (BSPU).The Department of Physical Culture, Sports and Teaching Methods organised a guest lecture entitled “Specific Features of Organising Physical Education Lessons in an Inclusive Learning Environment in General Secondary Education Institutions” for students enrolled in the Secondary Education (Physical Education) programme.

The invited speaker was Tetiana Lavrinenko, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Specialty 011 “Educational and Pedagogical Sciences” and a physical education teacher at the Municipal Institution “Kharkiv Special School No. 11” of the Kharkiv Regional Council. A distinctive feature of the event was the participation of a specialist who combines academic training with direct professional work in a general secondary education institution. This experience makes it possible to consider current challenges in inclusive physical education from the perspectives of both educational research and day-to-day teaching practice. The lecture addressed important aspects of organising physical education lessons in an inclusive learning environment, taking account of students’ individual abilities, adapting physical exercises, and differentiating physical activity levels. Particular attention was given to creating a safe, accessible and psychologically supportive learning environment in which every student can participate in physical activities according to their needs and abilities. The practice-oriented subject matter highlighted the importance of teachers’ professional flexibility, evidence-informed selection of teaching methods, and individualisation of the learning process. Engaging researchers and representatives of the professional community in teaching activities is an important aspect of implementing the Secondary Education (Physical Education) programme at Berdyansk State Pedagogical University.

The issues discussed are also relevant across programmes for students in Specialty A7 “Physical Culture and Sport” at the first (Bachelor’s) and second (Master’s) levels of higher education, particularly in the context of inclusive and adaptive physical activity and sport. Such meetings help integrate current scientific knowledge into students’ professional education, strengthen practice-oriented learning, and develop readiness to address professional challenges in real general secondary education settings. Future teachers benefit from exploring the professional approaches of specialists who work in educational settings every day. This deepens their understanding of teaching practice, develops professional judgement, and reinforces awareness of teachers’ responsibility for accessible, high-quality physical education. The participation of Tetiana Lavrinenko as an external specialist combining academic qualifications with practical teaching experience illustrates the university’s cooperation with the professional community and its commitment to strengthening the practical component of future physical education teachers’ training.

The guest lecture supported a practice-oriented approach to learning aimed at developing future physical education teachers’ professional competencies, including their readiness to organise learning activities that respond to students’ diverse educational needs.Such educational initiatives create additional opportunities to exchange academic knowledge and practical experience, develop academic cooperation, improve the learning process, and align professional teacher preparation with contemporary educational needs.

The Department of Physical Culture, Sports and Teaching Methods sincerely thanks Tetiana Lavrinenko for her professionalism, informative lecture, willingness to share her teaching experience, and contribution to the professional development of future physical education teachers.
